Sunday, November 5, 2000 2pm-8pm

Marking the close of Linda Vallejo’s highly acclaimed exhibition of major works, Los Cielos/The Heavens, the Social & Public Art Resource Center (SPARC) and Linda Vallejo present a full day of events celebrating Dia de Los Muertos on Sunday, November 5, 2000, from 2:00-8:00PM. Planned events include a Community Altar, Panel Discussion of distinguished Collectors, Artists and Historians, Performance Art and presentations of Danza and Ceremony, ending with a candlelight vigil. Families are welcome and the event is free to the public. Refreshments will be served throughout the day. A complete schedule of events is below. EVENT SCHEDULE:

2:00PM Dia de Los Muertos Community Altar
The community is invited to bring photographs of loved ones and flowers to place on a communal altar to honor family and friends.

2:30PM Panel Discussion on The Meaning of Symbols & Ceremony in Our Lives
A distinguished panel of Educators, Community Activists, Chicano Art Collectors and Artists will discuss the meaning of symbol and ceremony in our lives, Dia de Los Muertos imagery in art as well as it’s history and meaning in our community. Featured panelists include: Yreina Cervantez; Armando Duron; Lara Medina; and Sybil Venegas with Linda Vallejo as Moderator.

4:30PM Performance Artist, Rachel Salinas in Coyolxauhqui: Madre Cosmica
In this provocative piece, the artist gives form and color to a cultural rage and in so doing empowers women universally.

5:30PM Flores de Aztlan Dance Troupe and All Nations Women’s Circle perform Ceremonial Danza and Prayer Circle for our Relatives.
These two prominent indigenous women’s groups will offer Danza and Ceremony, a vibrant part of indigenous culture, to this community wide event.

6:30-8:00PM Candlelight Vigil
All are invited to spend a quiet, candlelit evening honoring the memories of loved ones and the joys of living.
