"Resurrection of the Green Planet" by Ernesto de la Loza 1990-91
Sponsored by Neighborhood Pride
This mural conveys our need for a global effort to protect and preserve the environment. It calls for the revitalization of the sense of world community, respect for human rights, and appreciation for the cultures and contributions of all people and living things. The central image is a curandera, hands placed in benediction over her young studnet emerging from the earth. Many symbols of fertility, harvest, growth, life and rebirth appear throughout the mural. Angels above symbolize earth, wind and fire. The homeless and neglected huddle in one corner. The artist explains: "At the foot of creativity there's destruction. If there's a central theme to this mural, it's how small the world is, how everything on this planet involves everybody."
