"Doliente de Hidalgo" by Willie Herron 1989-90
The mural was originally designed and painted from 1975- 1976. Herron originally received a commission ot paint this mural as compensation for the whitewashing of his mural "Quetzalcoatl," designed in 1972 and located in the rear alley of the same business. The mural depicts the original cry
of the native Mexican for freedom, justice, and democracy against the rule of Spain. Father Miguel Hidalgo is depicted in the center of the mural leading the independence movement. Symbolically, the mural addresses the increase in Latin American contributions to the Los Angeles area.
